Sell from US to Abroad
Selling from the United States to other countries is the smartest thing to do!

US is the cheapest in the World!

Because the US is the largest economy, many companies typically sell their products at the cheapest possible prices in the US to compete, so the US is a shopper's paradise. Remember those Japanese and South American tourists who go crazy in American shopping centers trying to fill their luggage with as many bargains as possible, there is a reason. Products in other countries typically cost %30 to %200 more than what they cost in the United States, and there's also less product variety. No where in the world there are as many malls, shops, and products to chose from as in the United States. So it has always made sense for people to pay thousands of dollars on flights to come and shop in the US.

Now the US is even cheaper!

In the recent years, the US dollars lost its value against the Euro and Pound along with other world currencies. Now the US dollar is 30% less valuable than the Euro, and almost half has valuable as the British Pound. If you travel to London, you will see that the very same Tommy Hilfiger shirt that you pay $60, sells for at least 60 British pounds. But 60 pounds is worth 109 dollars. So by simply sending that shirt to the United Kingdom, you can make 49 dollars, less shipping of course. The same thing applies to many countries, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Australia and Canada where things cost a lot more than in the United States. The US is the cheapest country to buy from.

What products are worth buying from the United States?
Basically, you can buy anything that can be shipped easily. Brand name clothing, electronics, laptops, digital cameras, gps devices, perfumes (yes! perfumes), lingerie, toys, vitamins are all excellent products to buy from the United States as there is an abundance of variety and excellent pricing on these items.

How long does shipping typically take?
How long shipping takes will depend on your seller, the shipping method, and your country's mail distribution network. United States Postal Service's Priority Mail takes about 4-7 days to most parts of the world, while Express Mail with tracking can take as fast as 2 days to Western Europe, 4 days to Eastern Europe. DHL, Fedex, TNT, UPS are also reliable companies that have various delivery time frames for different countries.

What about import duty, taxes, customs, VAT?
Custom's rules, taxes, regulations and processing times depend on many factors. The country of origin of the product and country of destination, size and quantity of the product, the shipping method, the shipping speed, the product being shipped, how the item is classified/declared, the time of the year, and the mood of the customs officer ...

Time of the year
For example, most countries' customs officers are more lenient during Christmas time because of the load and because everyone receives stuff.

Destination Country
Countries in more developed nations have better rules and specific import duties, taxes and duties that need to be paid are well documented, so the customs officers are more predictable, timely and reasonable.

Trade Agreements / Unions
If the country of origin and the country of destination have some trade agreement, there may be no tax or import duty due for the specific product that you're buying/selling. For example, there is no import duty between NAFTA countries : Mexico, Canada and the United States, the European Customs Union countries (all European Union countries + Turkey), so it's easier to buy and sell to countries in the trade union.

Quantity of Product Ordered
There may be limits on the quantity of non-dutiable products, for example for 3 DVDs, there may be no duty in a country, but for 4, there may be a tax. So check the rules of your country before you order.

Product Type
Certain products might not incur any duty while others do. For example, for a certain country there may be no import duty for books, while there may be import duty on CDs.

Size of the Product Ordered
There may be restrictions on the size of the product ordered. For example, there may be no import duty for 2 cartons of cigarettes, while there being a import duty for anything over 2 cartons.

Shipping Method & Speed
Products sent via different shipping methods (USPS vs. Fedex) and shipping speeds (priority mail vs. express mail) might go through different customs processing centers and there may be different processing charges due or nothing due based on the chosen method.

How the item is Declared
This is an interesting one. How the item is declared has an effect on how it can be taxed. For example, there may be no import duty or tax for mp3 players while there being a tax for audio equipment in a certain country. So if the package is declared as an Audio equipment, it will incur a tax, while it being declared as an mp3 player will incur nothing.

The Mood of the Customs Officer
Afterall, Customs officers are human beings too. And they need to process an x amount of items in a given time frame, so there may be some quality issues or discrepencies from one customs officer to another, just like in any work place. So sometimes, items can go through customs, sometimes they can get stuck, if your package catches their attention, it might get checked, or it might be let go. The buyer and seller are responsible of declaring the items in a legal manner and to provide the necessary documentation. But how your item is processed, totally depends on the mood of the customs officer.

What to do?
Buying and Selling internationally takes research, experience and knowledge both on the buyer and the seller side. Sellers should provide their policies and say who is responsible of dealing with and paying customs issues, taxes,i mport duties, and processing fees (if there are any), in their policies. Buyers should read these, ask questions and do their own research and figure out if the deal is worth pursuing.

Where can I learn more?
Most countries have webpages explaining their customs and import and export regulations. These are a great resource to start from. You can also call the customs offices directly and ask questions. There are also Chambers of Commerce which can provide you with information for exporting and importing. Large quantity sales can also require special licenses for sellers and buyers, and there may be specific import and export restrictions and embargoes that need to be checked before buying and selling any product. The buyers and sellers are responsible for abiding the rules of the countries that they live in and the treaties signed by their countries with foreign countries.
